Workshop: Communicative Language Testing

In this practical workshop we will guide you through the basics of communicative language testing by using the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). You will get a clear idea of what the CEFR is, why it is useful and how it can be used for language test development. We will also explain the basics of communicative, task-based language testing and guide you through test development by using this approach. With practical examples and guidelines for question-writing, this workshop will prepare you right away for your own language test development.

These topics will be addressed during the workshop:

  • What is the Common European Framework of Reference?
  • What are the criteria for a valid and reliable communicative test?
  • Where do I start when developing a communicative test?
  • How do I find and adapt authentic texts?
  • How do I write functional questions?
  • How can I use the CEFR for my marking and assessment?
